Register a death in Lancashire – how, where, when.
How to register a death in Lancashire.
A death in Lancashire must be registered in the Registration District in which it occurred within 5 working days, unless permission is granted to extend this period or the Coroner is involved. You might find the video about registering a death in Lancashire on the home page useful first.
You can register a death that took place anywhere in the areas covered by Lancashire County Council by going to any of its registration offices. All Lancashire County Council registration offices work on an appointment basis: call 0845 0530021 to make an appointment as soon as you have the medical certificate of death. This is normally supplied by your GP.
Occasionally, if the death was sudden or the doctor treating the deceased is unavailable, it may not be possible for a medical certificate of cause of death to be issued. If this happens, the death will have to be reported to the coroner which may lead to a delay in registering the death.
If this is not possible or convenient to go to a registration office in the area where the death took place then details may be given to any Registrar of Births and Deaths in England or Wales who will forward these to the correct Registration District. This will result in a delay in the “green form” being issued which authorises the undertaker to go ahead with the funeral. Please do bear this in mind when considering dates for the funeral.

It is vital the information recorded in the death register is correct. If a mistake is made it will be difficult for the person who registered the death in Lancashire to have it corrected. The person registering the death should check the information to be recorded in the register very carefully before the entry is signed.
If English is not the first language of the relative or other person registering the death and help is needed, it would be helpful for someone else to accompany him or her to the registrar’s office and act as interpreter. However, the relative or other person must register the death personally as a helper cannot register instead of them.
Lancashire Registration Offices use an appointment only system. Please telephone the office of your choice to make an appointment.
