Register a death in Cheshire – How, Who, Where.

If for some reason it is hard to register a death in Cheshire within five days,  the time allowed can be extended by the Registrar in exceptional circumstances or if the coroner is involved. The registration takes place in the district where the death happened. This can be at any of the registration offices in  the Registration District the person died in, that is either Cheshire East or West Cheshire and Chester.

East Cheshire has an appointment system – you will need to call the Registration Service 0300 123 5019 to make an appointment at the register office in Cheshire East which is the most convenient to you.

For West Cheshire and Chester, the number is 0300 123 7037 and once again, registration is by appointment only.

If it is difficult to get to the appropriate registration office, you may visit any Register Office in England or Wales give the necessary information. However registration by “declaration” will result in a delay in issuing the document needed for the funeral.

Register a death in Cheshire.

Before attempting to register a death in Cheshire, you must have the Medical Cause of Death Certificate from the doctor, or in the case of a death reported to the coroner, confirmation from the coroner’s office that the appropriate certificates have been issued by his office.  The coroner often sends the document direct to the undertaker, but the Coroners Officers will advice you.

  • a relative of the deceased
  • a person who was present at the death
  • the person who is arranging the funeral
  • the occupier of the establishment where the death took place.

What certificates are issued by the Cheshire Registrar?

  • The green form, which allows the funeral director to go ahead with the funeral.
  • Benefits Agency certificate to complete this and send it to off to cancel the deceased’s state pension and any other state allowances.
  • Death certificates. These are cheaper on the day and you will inevitably need more than you expect for  dealing with the will, probate, bank accounts, insurance and so on.
